Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery at LA Laser and Skin Center

What is blepharoplasty eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty eyelid surgery removes excess fat, skin and muscle from above and below the eyes. It can eliminate loose or sagging skin that creates folds and disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid. It also removes fatty deposits, bags under the eyes, and drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris.

Is blepharoplasty eyelid surgery right for me?

Blepharoplasty eyelid surgery is right for you if you are in good health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of your procedure. Eyelid surgery does not eliminate crow’s feet, raise the eyebrows, or remove dark circles under the eyes. Many patients consider surgery to eliminate evidence of ethnic heritage, but the procedure cannot achieve these results. Your surgeon may be able to surgically add an upper eyelid crease in conjunction with blepharoplasty eyelid surgery, but this will not eliminate ethnic eyelid features.

What will happen at my blepharoplasty eyelid surgery consultation?

You’ll meet with a plastic surgeon during a one on one consultation. They will examine your facial features and make sure blepharoplasty eyelid surgery is right for you. They will also outline the full pre and postoperative process so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

What will happen the day I have blepharoplasty eyelid surgery? How long does it take?

When you check in to the surgery center, you will fill out a few forms before entering the surgery preparation room. Once changed into your surgery gown, a nurse will insert an IV and begin a saline drip to prepare your body for anesthesia. When it’s time for surgery, you will be taken into the operating room and then given medication through your IV so that you are unconscious during surgery. It will feel like you’ve only been asleep for a few minutes, but the full surgery will take 1-3 hours depending on your surgical plan. You will wake up from surgery in a comfortable recovery room surrounded by our attentive postoperative team. It will take about an hour to fully recover from anesthesia.

What is recovery like after blepharoplasty eyelid surgery?

Your surgical team will provide detailed after care instructions following your blepharoplasty eyelid surgery. It is very important to follow these instructions. Failing to do so can result in serious postoperative complications.

For 2-3 weeks after eyelid surgery, you may experience bruising and swelling, particularly at the corners of your eyelids. You may also experience a tight feeling around your eyes as well as dryness and itching. As you heal, you may have temporary eyesight problems, such as double or blurred vision. Excessive tearing and sensitivity to light and wind are common in the weeks following surgery.

You must refrain from wearing contact lenses for at least two weeks. Eye drops may be necessary to lubricate dry eyes. Most patients go back to work 7-10 following the procedure and resume strenuous activities two weeks after surgery.
