Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery at LA Laser and Skin Center

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a type of cosmetic surgery designed to improve eyelid function and appearance. Patients who choose to undergo plastic surgery involving the eyelids typically do so to eliminate signs of aging or to correct functional issues that impair the eyes.

Depending on the issue being treated, blepharoplasty can be performed on just the lower or upper eyelids or both. The procedure is an effective way to treat:

  • Puffiness affecting the eyelids caused by fat deposits,
  • Drooping eyelids,
  • Sagging or loose skin affecting the contour of the eyelids, and
  • Under-eye bags.

Most patients start to notice that their eyes appear more defined and that they look more rested, alert, and rejuvenated within a few weeks following the blepharoplasty surgery.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Upper Blepharoplasty

This procedure is used to remove fat and skin from the upper eyelids. The surrounding skin and muscles are also tightened to create a more youthful appearance. The incision is normally made in the crease of the eyelid to minimize visible scarring.

Lower Blepharoplasty

This procedure is used to tighten sagging skin and to eliminate or re-position fat under the eyes. The incision is made inside the eyelid or along the eyelashes. Many patients choose to combine lower eyelid surgery with inject-able fillers, chemical peels, or other skin rejuvenation techniques.

Lower and Upper Blepharoplasty

It is possible to correct conditions affecting both lower and upper eyelids in a single surgery.

Recovery Following Eyelid Surgery

Minor swelling, bruising, discomfort, and eye irritation are normal following any cosmetic surgery involving the eyes. It is important to follow the doctor’s detailed aftercare and follow-up instructions to ensure a successful recovery. Thin pieces of tape are placed over the eyes immediately following the surgery. The doctor may also prescribe medications to reduce pain, prevent infection, and promote healing. Cold compresses and ice packs can also be used to alleviate swelling and discomfort.

Results You Should Expect Following Eyelid Surgery:

While the results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting, the procedure does not stop the normal aging process. Certain corrections may be immediately visible; however, others may take several weeks to become fully apparent. Scarring is usually minimal and often imperceptible.
